What's Cookin' Today on CRN: 09/28:
I help pull together the CRN website and podcasts like these linked in from above. Today I'll be sure and listen to an interview with a group that supports the struggling fishermen in the wake of the little mess BP left in the Gulf of Mexico. You can hear it later at this url if you want to check it out.
A few years ago I was in touch with my friends at Anthony's Seafood regarding a similar idea for Alaskan salmon fishermen. That was all about marketing salmon, because of my affiliation with salmon lobbyist extraordinaire, Bobby T....but why not any fish? I think its because the customer choice is for the type of fish more than where it was caught. I assume snapper I order is pacific, caught locally, but what if it were trucked up to Washington from California yesterday. I sort of would like to know that!
Each fish is affixed with a sequentially numbered tag, then publicly display all the credentials online – who caught it, where in the Gulf, from what vessel, even confirmation of the fish species. The system seeks to reestablish consumer confidence in Gulf seafood after last year’s oil disaster.
